FENCING DONE-SHEEP-NEW ARRIVALS-PEACHES

25 09 2015

GREETINGS

We are still enjoying the great weather. It has enabled me to get the fencing done.

FENCING DONE

I am so gad that its  done.  Moving and setting up those 16 foot sections of fencing was harder than I remembered.  Of course I am a lot older now.  Today I hope to start seeding, small areas of the fenced in area.

The sheep had been in the barn for 4 days.  They were glad to be out but bewildered by the fenced in area.

What's going on!

What’s going on!

All was forgotten soon enough when acorns were spotted.  Soon they were  gobbling them up.

Still lots to do out of the sheep area and fixing up the gardens there.

NEW ARRIVALS

Its fall and time for my annual visit to John Peters (The Chicken Man)  It’s a trip I always look forward to with anticipation , what kind of hens will come home with me this year.  I promised myself to get only two birds.

Lynn and I met Sheila a fellow chicken lover from Williamsburg and off we went.  Between us we bought 9 hens.  Sheila getting the most at 4, Lynn got two and I got three.  I bought an Easter Egger and two bantam Easter Egger.  They will all start laying in late fall.

I put them in the dog house and there was quite a bit of discussion between them.  There is just enough time for the adjustment and they will be part of the other flock.

Emma is the buff colored Bantam and Rosemary is next to her the bigger bird is Dorothy

PEACHES

I had beautiful large peaches this year but this is how they looked.  I think it’s caused by a moth but don’t know what to do about it.  Any advice?

ROSIE ARRIVES

A trip to the Chicken Man’s house is always and adventure.

The coops were full of all shapes and sizes of birds.

From the exotic to the normal everyday hens.

There were lots of Bantams but this time I wasn’t looking for Bantams.  I got a black sex-linked hen.  She will be a good layer.  She is shy and a little smaller than Samantha.  There is Chaos out in the hen yard today.  Everyone feels they are in the wrong place it will take a few days for things to settle down  I will have a picture of Rosie on my next blog.  There were beautiful bunnies there too.  They are very tempting.

HAY IN THE BARN

Today  over 50 bales of hay were delivered.

Hay in the barn makes me so happy.  Just knowing I have enough for a while and knowing that I don’t have to bring it up the stairs brings joy to my heart.  He only has about 100 bales of second cutting to sell me and I will have to find someone else who will deliver.

I think I will advertise the end of August at the grain store.    An elevator is still on my wish list!

My son gave Chris great advise on stacking hay and why it can’t be packed too tightly.  Chris stacked them all and it was done within a half hour.  What a great day.

HEIRLOOM RADISHES

I found this beauty out  in the garden yesterday.

Unfortunately there aren’t many there.  They were planted before the big rains and most of the seeds got washed away.  The soil here is so good now.  I planted some more lettuce mix, catnip and some beets the other day.  I think I will plant more beets today.

LIL’s FIRST EAR OF CORN

Mmmmmm good

Mmmmmm

We are expecting more bad weather this afternoon through tomorrow.  Heavy rains, thunderstorms, and more.  I really am thinking that a hoop house would be such a good idea and must put that on my list  for the spring.  Hope you have a wonderful day and many thanks for reading my blog;  Carole

THROUGH THE BARN WINDOW-BLUE DYE DAY-CHICKENS

6 02 2014

HELLO

MAUDE SAID TODAY'S BREAKFAST WAS GREAT

THROUGH THE BARN WINDOW

Today through the barn window the snow comes down heavily and dusts the old Hemlock tree on my neighbors property.  Its a beautiful site, the town is quiet, people are snuggled in their warm houses for the duration of the storm.  When its over there will be a lot of snow to shovel.  The sheep have been in and out this morning and were ready for their breakfast, Maude and Carol  K especially enjoy being outside.  The birds are all out looking for food and seeds.

Last night I was out on the porch and saw the Moon.  From the porch it looked like it was full of snow.

BLUE DYE DAY

I am not liking the blue as much as the other colors and will find a different blue dye when I do the next batch.

CHICKENS

I put in a call to John AKA The CHicken Man and he will raise up some bantams for me in the breeds I want.  He will be raising up lots of chicken anyway and that will be great for me.  The equipment  is costly and time it takes to raise chicks well I just don’t have the time for it.  Spring is such a busy time with shows and spring yard clean up.

I am working on the fleece lined mittens and hope to have one completed tomorrow.

Many thanks for reading my blog on this snowy day.  I hope you have a good day.   Carole
