MORE HAY-GOODBYE CHRIS=OPEN HOUSE AT THE FIREHOUSE-SAM

10 08 2015

GREETINGS

The whole house and yard is encased with the smell of skunk.  Its as though he was in the house!

The weather is still nice and cool but more humidity and some needed rain will be here in a day or two.

Chris left yesterday.  We got so much accomplished while he was here.  He will be back in October.

MORE HAY

Cindy met us in Greenfield and we put 18 bales of hay in her Mini Van!!!!!!  And loaded 4 bales in my car.  The total in the barn is now 42 toward my goal of 100.I won’t start using the 100 till mid march to insure that when I run out the new hay will be ready.

Thanks so much Cindy.  Chris and Charlie got it into the barn in no time.

SAM AND MOM

Sam the man has been here a year.  He was two yesterday.  He has changed so much and come into his own.

I am so happy that i got he and Owen  Although Owen didn’t have a long time here he to came into his own before he passed away.

Yesterday was another anniversary.  It was one year since my Mom passed.  Time has flown by.  I miss she and my Dad so much. If you still have parents  be sure to ask them things about your family and their lives.  I have so many questions unanswered.  When Cindy got home last night she has an old clock which belonged to my Dad’s family.  It’s never touched or wound up yet yesterday it was ticking, how interesting.

THE FIREHOUSE OPEN HOUSE

My son so enjoys being a volunteer fireman.  It’s a rewarding job   Yesterday was there annual open house.

Good friends and family Lil meets Sparky here new hero

Food was served, all the equipment was out and there was a smoke house that you could go into.  What a fun and educational day for adults and children alike.

Many thanks for reading my blog today and I hope you had a lovely day.  Carole

FIREMANS PANCAKE BREAKFAST-THE CHICKENS-BLACK WALNUT DYE

12 10 2013

Hello

FIREMANS PANCAKE BREAKFAST

The Colrain Fire Department had their pancake breakfast and auction today.  They do this twice a year to earn money for needed equipment.

I must say they do  a great job in this town and we are lucky to have them.

THE CHICKENS

Yesterday one of my hens died.  I really don’t know how old she is or what happened.  She wasn’t sick at all.  Now Hazel had a very bad cold and couldn’t hardly crow this morning.

IMG_1556

I have separated him and he has been eating a little boiled egg and yogurt.   No one else seems to be affected but I have sprayed all the coops with RX and hope that I won’t have to put them on antibiotics.  They have never been on them before. The new gals are doing fine and learning how to defend themselves.  They stick together.

I have decided to put all the inside the barn hens on antibiotics for 10 days.  I have raised hens for over 12 years and this is the first time this has happened but its a necessary precaution.  Only one hen is laying so for 20 days starting tomorrow all eggs will be thrown away..

BLACK WALNUT DYE

I have finished one batch of Black Walnut dye and its in the freezer.

IMG_1552

I am letting the walnuts dry out and when I get back from NY I will make a few more batches and then throw the nuts in the freezer.  The dye is easy to make.  Now is a great time to find black walnuts on the roadside.  I used about 12 of them in a pot which you only use for dye.  I boil them for a couple of hours, let cool, take the nuts out and put aside and pour the liquid into any freezeable container..  If you want to dye or overdye with it just bring it to a simmer and drop in your pre-soaked wool or yarn and let it simmer for about 45 minutes.  Take it out and rinse.  You can use the dye over and over of course your will get a lighter brown as time goes by.

A WARM SPOT TO ROOST

This morning while driving by the Brick Meeting House I noticed these pigeons on the steeple of the meeting house.

PANCAKE BREAKFAST AUTUMN

6 10 2012

HELLO

Today was the Pancake Breakfast put on by the COlrain Fire Department.  They put them on a few times a year to earn money for new equipment.    The towns people always show up for these events to support the volunteer fire department.

OCTOBER

October and November are my favorite months.  Even after the beauty of the colors are gone there is the rustle of leaves underneath ones foot, the wonderful smell of a wood  fire, the cozy houses with lights beaming from their windows, and winter chores done so one can do the late fall and winter pleasures of rug hooking. spinning and knitting .

I am already looking forward to my return from Florida.  The hot. humid weather of that state does not agree with me.

More from Florida.  Thank you so much for reading my blog and hope that you have a wonderful day

Oh I did put the wall hanging up even though it’s not quite finished.  I have it in a hallway .  It makes me smile every time I walk past it so in the end it was worth all the hours of hand sewing.
