MOLAS FROM PANAMA

Iris Simpson from Canada gave a wonderful talk and slide show on Molas from Panama.

I have heard lectures before but Iris did the best job of explaining how they were made and why the people of that part of Panama made them.  They are bright and colorful and now being made for the tourist trade which helps the tribes keep their old ways of living.  I was really surprised when she said that she had never been to Panama, she was so well versed on the subject I though she might have lived there for a while.  I loved seeing them up close it’s all done in hand stitching.

Thank you Iris you were great and I learned a lot from your lecture and slide show.

WIDE CUT RUG MAKING’

The Speaker for Saturday afternoon was    Tim McNerney from Newburyport Ma.  He does very wide cut primitive rugs.  He has done hundreds of them.  I was so impressed by his style and the many rugs he brought.  They are very soft and are all used in his homes.  Each rug he designs himself ,  Some patterns are available from Quail Hill.

NEWFOUNDLAND-GRENFELL RUGS

11 08 2013

HELLO

NEWFOUNDLAND AND GRENFELL RUGS

STEPHANIE KRAUSS gave a wonderful talk and slide show on her recent visit to Newfoundland this year.  The slide show was so wonderful I think everyone in the room was ready to book a trip.   She showed us a picture of a beautiful iceberg (which takes 2 years to come down Iceberg Alley from Greenland) and it was astounding.   It was stuck on a sandbar and when it melted sufficiently it would turn upside down and float away.IMG_1048

Newfoundland looks a little like Ireland with great cliffs and the beautiful sea.   Fishing is the prime industry.

Dr. Grenfell visited this island and saw the beauty of it but also saw the poverty.  He wanted to help the people and saw that they were making rugs and started a business selling the rugs to tourist the venture moved into a bigger venture which ended up  giving the people much better lives and funding hospitals.  Read more online about the Grenfell’s mission and the rug business on Wikipedia.

It looks like Newfoundland is now near the top of my bucket list!

GREEN MOUNTAIN RUG HOOKING GUILD HOOK-IN

9 08 2013

Hello

After a wonderful breakfast I am anxious to see whats new in the shops and get started.   The only thing I need to buy is some linen backing.     The following is a picture of a rug being worked on by my Friend from Montreal Louise.  The pattern is her own and drawn by her.     It will be a priceless piece of art when she is done.  Tomorrow I will show you Debbie’s and Mary Jane’s rugs and what I have done on the three cat rug.IMG_1016

Proddy Hooking’

Linda Watson gave such an  interesting talk about where she lives in England and what type of hooking goes on there.  Her presentation and pictures were wonderful.  It gave everyone an insight of how it was to grow up in the north of England a half of a century ago.  We got a clear picture of what frames were used, what materials were used and how the people themselves lived.

Proddy is a type of hooking that uses everything.  Old sweaters, all types of clothing  even t-shirts.   Its had many uses through-out its life.  First in the livingroom, moving maybe to the kitchen or back door then to the loo which was outside then to the allotment house then recycled into the earth.   Everythig was used and reused not thrown away.

Tomorrow I will be showing you pictures of Newfoundland and a wonderful story about Dr. Grenfell.

I am bidding on these wonderful , handmade  in Newfoundland mittens I hope I am the highest bidder.

GREEN MOUNTAIN RUG HOOKING GUILD’S SUMMER HOOK-IN

I have been waiting for this event since late winter.  I look forward to it e very year.  It’s only a couple of days away but it’s so much fun to see friends and not have to worry about things at home.  Any trip I  go on takes weeks of preparation.  I have to be sure that I have all animal feed, lists for the sitters, medications and packing for myself.  Minnie and Lilly Pad are going to be somewhat upset by my leaving.  They are used to having people all around.  My step-grandson Tyler is taking care of them and giving Sammy his medications.  All three need some time spent with them.

It’s a beautiful ride up to West Lebanon even though its highway you wind around the beautiful mountains of Vermont, next thing you know you are climbing around mountains and looking down onto old New England towns with white Church spires standing out.  The land is doted with cows and horses.  Someone in the group did this wonderful landscape of their family’s farm at night.  The farm was nestled in a valley and it was all lite up (milking time) the snow glistened and the stars twinkled.  It was a beautiful piece.
