DYEING YARN-OWEN-HOOKED RABBIT FINALLY FINISHED

4 03 2015

GREETINGS

It’s not as cold today and we are suppose to get snow, sleet and freezing rain in the evening.  I am worried about the barn and will be putting sandbags u in front of the door later in the afternoon.  The chickens are laying more eggs and the sheep are getting rammy (butting each other) so spring can’t be far away.

DYEING YARN

I have a good amount of Bartlett yarn hanging around and decided to over dye it and sell it at Sheep and Shawl.  Tomorrow if the weather is good I will be bringing things to the shop for my hooking class and to sell. Liz is back from her wonderful time in Maine and I am anxious to hear all about it.

OWEN

The house is much different now without him in it.  Thank you all for all you words of wisdom, you will never know how much they helped me.  I realized  in Owen’s death my calling always was animals.  I love them.  Sometimes they are here for a short time and others for a long time.  Even the naughty ones like Marley and Mr. Peepers are loved.  Thank you all.

HOOKED RABBIT FINALLY  MOSTLY FINISHED

I am trying to be a better finisher in the rug hooking area.  Lots and lots of unfinished projects.  I finally got this rabbit piece finished just in time for Easter.

WINTER WINTER GO AWAY

This has been a horrible winter for so many folks.  Tonight was the last straw.  I went up to give the sheep water and the faucet came off in my hand.    I have been pretty good about all the broken pipes and hard work but I am now done.  Hope the melt is slow though I really don’t feel like doing a major barn and coop clean up.

Many thanks for reading my blog on this sunny March day.  I hope you have a wonderful day.   Carole

OWEN

GREETINGS

OWEN

IMG_4423

Last night Owen had some sort of spell he rested comfortably and I took him to the Vets this am.  He had a stroke.  He had thyroid and heart problems which go hand in hand.  There was nothing to do.  Now he is gone.

People have wondered why I would take a 10 year old cat with medical problems in the first place.  I say why not.   Yes it does open you up to heart break and I thought for sure I would have him longer than  months.  He was given up because he was sick I can’t imagine that.  And in the shelter for months.  When I saw his little picture I had to take him home with Sam.  It took him quite some time to feel comfortable here.  And  a few months ago I heard him purr for the first time.  I knew then that he had settled in.  I will miss him and am so grateful that I had a chance to know him.

SNOW-BBC 4 RADIO KNITTING PROGRAMS-OWEN-MIXES

24 01 2015

GREETINGS

The snow is gently falling here and its beautiful.  Of course I am snug and cozy in my house and don’t have to go anywhere.  They say the driving is treacherous.  The birds are all gathering at the feeders and the few squirrels that live around here are there too.  Another storm brewing for Sunday night into Monday.

BBC 4

I have been listening to some very interesting knitting stories on BBC 4 radio via the internet.  Yesterday I listen to a show about knitting on Fair Isle.  They were interviewing farmers and knitters and school children.

OWEN

IMG_4423

Owen came here in September along with Sam.    He was very thin with a matted coat and fleas.  No sparkle to his eyes like Sam had.  I know he had gone through a lot but these past few weeks has seen the spark in his eyes and him playing and running with Sam.

MIXES

I have a lot of mixes made up for quick use.  Some recipe’s were gotten off the internet and others in the Make A Mix series.  Today was a good day for making chocolate pudding with home-made whipped cream.    The cats will enjoy a small dish of whipped cream after supper.

WINTER-KNITTING PROJECT-EGGS-.OWEN

1 12 2014

GREETINGS

Last night was a beautiful but cold night.  Today was warmer.  All kinds of birds are flocking to the feeders,  I just love watching them. Cindy and I had a wonderful time at Chandlers for Thanksgiving, the food was excellent.  We stayed the night at The Deerfield Inn which was delightful.

KNITTING PROJECT

I saw this wonderful sheep ornament on the Shetland Wool page.  I found some directions and this is how it looks so far.  There are some mistakes which will be fixed when I do the next one.  It called for styrofoam  balls but I don’t have any and I would have to drive 20 miles to get them.  I don’t know just what size I would need so ordering them isn’t a way to go.  I thought I would stuff them with cotton and put some balsam in them.  WHen I am done I will post the picture.  They are fun to make.

EGGS

I have had chickens for over 10 years and have enjoyed every part of having them.  What is especially nice is the eggs.  Never knowing when a off size will happen or a different color.  Its a surprise every day.  The hens are laying a little more now.  Yea and no lights so far.  I am going to get a light in the big coop and there is a light in the rooster coop, on cold days it does add some warmth.

OWEN

Owen is a wonderful cat.  Why people get rid of older animals is a mystery to me.  They are quiet, and so grateful.  He is a dear.

SHELBURNE FALLS FARMERS MARKET-MAINE ORGANIC FARMER AND GARDENER-TWICE 55

24 11 2014

GREETINGS

The woods are shrouded in fog this morning and a gentle rain has been falling all night.  I redug the trench and no water in the barn.  I cleaned the barn yesterday and one to get on a once a week schedule of barn cleaning again.  It sure makes things easier and only takes an hour and a half.  I am off to the cemetery to plant spring bulbs this morning.

SHELBURNE FALLS FARMERS MARKET

Saturday was a perfect day for the Autumn market.  It was brisk and windy and the day ended with a few snow flurries.  The crowds weren’t there  like last year but it was an enjoyable day.

MY TABLE AT THE MARKET

More and more fairs are held that weekend so the competition is brisk.  I made a lot of contacts and met  Eliza.  Eliza writes a beautiful blog with many wonderful pictures and she is only a few towns away.

MAINE ORGANIC FARMER AND GARDNER

IMG_4079

Lots of interesting news.  I particularly liked the article on the comeback of Granges in Maine.  With the encouragement of farming, Granges in Maine are making a comeback.  What good news. The Grange was an important part of my family life and I hope that our state can start to encourage small farming.  This newspaper is very reasonable and if you are a farmer, gardener or folks that are interested in your food I encourage you to join this wonderful organization.

TWICE 55

IMG_4060

Since I got my Piano back I have been looking for these wonderful song books.  They were found in some books that I brought back from my old homestead.  I am delighted.  Twice 55 was first published with a collection of 18 songs in 1913.  It soon went to 55 songs and when World War One came along it went to 120 and was named Twice 55.   These song books came from my Dad’s homestead where there was a large family steeped in the arts of singing and playacting.

My Dad and I would often have sing-a-longs on car trips.  One of my favorite songs was Loch Lomond.  I once was in Scotland and on the way back to the airport from The Highlands I saw a small sign Loch Lomond.  I quickly stopped the car, it’s a beautiful loch and it brought back those sweet times of my Dad and I signing that song.  I am not a great piano player but will enjoy playing some of these songs again.

The chickadee’s have been out in full force getting as any sunflower seeds as they can.  I hope you have a wonderful day its starting to clear up now.  Many thanks for reading my blog.   Carole and my helper Owen
