REPAIRING A MARKET BASKET

In the late 80’s and early 90’s I made lots of baskets.  I found a kindred spirit in basket making, spinning, weaving and now rug hooking in my friend Deb. We have had many adventures over the years and I especially remember one such adventure in the wilds of New Hampshire where we learned to pound ash.  It was something we both  remember with laughter and wonderful baskets.

This market basket was on the porch full of wool in a  sad state of disrepair.

I brought it in and luckily I had the materials I needed to fix it.

IMG_4440

It only took an hour or so and now I have a usable basket again.

In the spring I plan to make some willow baskets from my willow.

ELLIOTT’S NEW DIGS

Thought I would show you Elliott;s new area

Sally would love to get in there to eat the grain.

DDIE

I have renamed Morticia’s son Eddie.  The name suits him.

IMG_4451

Yesterday I purchased a mirror for him.  He had to be separated from his sister and Mom, he was getting so unruly.  In many articles I have read the mirror will entertain him.  He is enjoying it and talking to it.

IMG_4456

When Chris comes all will join him in the box room in separate cages .  In the summer Eddie will rejoin his family outside.

Sammy is enjoying is favorite activity, bird watching.

THE BLIZZARD-ELLIOTT-MARLEY-THE BIRDS

27 01 2015

GREETINGS

THE BLIZZARD

All the preparation was for not.  We had around 6 inches of snow.  It was very windy and still is windy but we didn’t lose power and the snow was light and fluffy.    It was and is very cold.  Icicles now hang from the roofs.

ELLIOTT

One of the preparations for the storm was separating Elliott from the sheep.  I had a gate which almost fits across the barn and he has been very comfortable there.  He will get up and move around but doesn’t have to worry about the sheep eating his food and tripping him.  I notice on warmer days he is much better much like me arthritis does that. It’s hard to watch such a vibrant and regal animal wind down.  He has protected the sheep day and night and now deserves some peace from them.

This is the year of separating Marly too.  At least in the winter.  He is so unruly and can be quite mean.  I can never turn my back on him or I will be flying in the air like a cartoon character.  He will be in the same area that the sheep are in but he will not be with them.

THE BIRDS

The birds have kept me hopping, eating food faster than I can fill the feeders.  Our neighborhood Ruby Woodpecker even came around trying to finish off the suet.

IMG_4432

Not the greatest picture taken through the kitchen window, he was pecking at the suet 100 miles an hour!

I have been spending this down time mending some things.  I have a whole basket full of things that need a little hand sewing here and there.  It’s a perfect thing to do on a cold, windy day.  I also managed to fix a problem on my computer although it took me a few timeS of playing around with it to get it done.

Many thanks for reading my blog today and i hope you have a wonderful day.  Carole

SNOW-BBC 4 RADIO KNITTING PROGRAMS-OWEN-MIXES

24 01 2015

GREETINGS

The snow is gently falling here and its beautiful.  Of course I am snug and cozy in my house and don’t have to go anywhere.  They say the driving is treacherous.  The birds are all gathering at the feeders and the few squirrels that live around here are there too.  Another storm brewing for Sunday night into Monday.

BBC 4

I have been listening to some very interesting knitting stories on BBC 4 radio via the internet.  Yesterday I listen to a show about knitting on Fair Isle.  They were interviewing farmers and knitters and school children.

OWEN

IMG_4423

Owen came here in September along with Sam.    He was very thin with a matted coat and fleas.  No sparkle to his eyes like Sam had.  I know he had gone through a lot but these past few weeks has seen the spark in his eyes and him playing and running with Sam.

MIXES

I have a lot of mixes made up for quick use.  Some recipe’s were gotten off the internet and others in the Make A Mix series.  Today was a good day for making chocolate pudding with home-made whipped cream.    The cats will enjoy a small dish of whipped cream after supper.

ICY WALKWAYS-HYACINTHS-SAMANTHA-APPRECIATING WOOD

21 01 2015

HELLO

Winter has been harsh here in Western Massachusetts.  We now have ice-covered snow and glare icy sidewalks.

IMG_4411

One is lost without sand or salt and yesterday I was out, my Son sanded the walkway and the driveway this morning so I can get some errands done.

HYACINTHS

Have you started yours yet?

IMG_4410

I only have white bulbs this year and will stop today at a shop that often still has bulbs for sale and I maybe able to get another color.  All of last years bulbs have been planted so I should see a nice display this spring.

APPRECIATING WOOD

I think everyone can appreciate Trees and the wonderful things that they provide.  This week I have added another couple of things that  they are good for.

IMG_4400

I am now using it in the chicken coops as a dust bath and I did use it for icy pathways.  The chickens have used it and it certainly helped me make my way to the car.

SAMANTHA

Samantha has grown so much and is a bossy gal.  She and Rosie don’t hang out much anymore.  They both have new friends and are in the same coop.

THE DAYS OF LONG SHADOWS

A blogger friend of mine Bridget from Ireland had  a picture of her shadow and these words with it..  It was so beautiful. In my childhood I remember family members taking about this so I was delighted to be reminding of this saying. The days of the long shadows are leaving us and for me it can’t come soon enough.  This coming weekend they are predicting another big storm.  Looking forward to the short month of February and longer days and the coming of spring.

FROZEN PIPES/ FURNACE PROBLEMS -MOVIES I AM WATCHING-FUN IN THE SNOW-HOOKING CLASS PROJECT

16 01 2015

HELLO

We have had some terrible weather, I was plagued with some frozen pipes which thawed and were fine, now it seems that there is a boiler issue.  Someone is coming today to see.   No heat in the kitchen except for the wood stove.  Which means I am getting up often at night to put wood in.  The kitchen is a separate zone.  Will be glad to have that issue cleared up as tonight temps are going near 10 below with the wind chill.

FUN IN THE SNOW

We had some great snow recently.  It was perfect for making snowmen and sledding.  Lil really enjoys the sled .

MOVIE RECOMMENDATION

LIVING ON A DOLLAR

I usually watch movies or documentary’s when I am hooking.  Yesterday I came across one that I highly recommend.  It is about the trials and tribulations of 2 college men spending the summer in Guatemala and living on a dollar a day to better learn about extreme poverty.  We in America think we know a lot about poverty.  But I think like everything else you have to live it to know it.  We have many programs that will help you, in other countries you are on your own.  An interesting fact I learned was 1.1 billion people around the world live on a dollar or less a day.  After a couple of weeks into it they realized that they didn’t have much energy and became lethargic.  Bad nutrition was the cause of this some children don’t have the energy to play.  Things are improving slowly  There are some programs set up in Guatemala that will loan people small amounts of money to start businesses.  Rosa borrowed $200. and started a weaving business. Now she is able to save some money for emergencies. This was a thought provoking movie which ended with a positive note.

CLASS HOOKING PROJECT

This winter/spring hooking class at SHeep and Shawl has to pieces to choose from  Each can be a hanging or chair pad.  The one I am working on now is called Posies in a Vase.  I am enjoying it.
