NEW ARRIVAL-THE LATEST IN CHICKEN WEAR-THE GARDEN-GOING AWAY

22 07 2015

GREETINGS

Chris has gone and I spent a lovely afternoon with my friend Patti.  Her gardens are to die for.  SHe has done such a splendid job on them.  I got a huge bouquet of catnip which I will be drying and making into cat beds and toys.  Some of the humidity is gone and a slight breeze on this beautiful summer day.

Helen had her stitches out on Monday it was the hottest day.  SHe has an infection and will have to take antibiotics for 10 days.  She GAINED 1-1/2 pounds.  Yea Helen.  Chris and I worked some on her new house.

I did a spring cleaning on one of the inside coops hanging spearmint in it to keep it smelling nice and discourage insects.

NEW ARRIVAL

Kitty has arrived and looks like a lighter version of Helen.  She was the only bird left in a flock  and needed company.  She will be separated from Hazel’s group by a fence  till they get use to each other.

I hope it will be a smooth transition.  SHe is an older bird and will lay the occasional blue/green egg.

THE NEWEST CHICKEN IN CHICKEN WEAR

Phoebe’s back is a mess from Mr. Peppers and she adores him so, taking her away from him would be a last resort.  Now she is wearing the latest in chicken wear, a chicken saddle.  I think the color goes well with her lavender/gray feathers.  She is now used to it  I think I will make a few for her as she will need a change every once in a while

THE GARDEN

I don;t have a lot of sun on this property, the greatest amount is behind the house on the hill.  It makes gardening quite difficult with leg problems.  I will be thinking of ways I can improve things and make them easier.

What I did plant this year is doing well.  I love seeing the leeks flourish and think of all the potato leek soup I will be making each time I see them.

Some beans are coming along, the peppers and herbs are doing nicely and radishes and beets  will be plentiful.

The Sheep

They have been enjoying the many corn husks and weeds this summer.

Tomorrow Debbie and I will be leaving for White River Junction fpr 2 days of Rug hooking, seeing old friends and listening to lectures.  I haven’t been in some time and am looking forward to the two days away.  It’s the first time I have left Sammy.    We will have a wonderful time and there will be lots of pictures when I get back.

FRIGID TEMPS, GOODBYE CHICKEN LITTLE -CHRISTMAS SHEEP ORNAMENT-HELLO HELEN AND PHOEBE

9 12 2014

GREETING

It’s a frigid morning here on the farm.  Ice in the chicken water.  Oatmeal is cooling to warm up their tummies.  SHeep are comfortable with their warm coats.  Cats curled around the wood stove.  All is well.

GOOD BYE CHICKEN LITTLE.

On Sunday morning I went into the coop and he was slumped in the corner.  His comb was very pale for months now, but he was active and running around and eating well.  I really wonder if there wasn’t something wrong, only he seemed fine.  Mr. Peppers is looking for him.  He is lonely.  I called up The CHicken Man and made arrangements to get a couple of hens.

I went down just as dark was approaching.  The smell of wood smoke was wafting through the air.  He lives about 10 minutes drive from my house in a remote part of Colrain.  I love the drive the scenery is spectacular even at that hour.  His coops are sparse in the winter, but he had a few cute bantams and other hens that will be laying soon.  I bought 2 araucana’s so there will be a few more green or blue eggs  coming soon.  Phoebe is the lighter colored one and very shy so no picture of her today, she is also flighty and Helen is the darker one, she is calm and friendly.    Mr. Peppers is on top of the world today!

THE SHEEP ORNAMENT

There is a lot of mistakes in this first one but I like how it came out.  I put cotton stuffing in it and some balsam.  I think it would be better if it was firmer though.  My friend Vicki has something that is firm and I will try that.  I will be going  near JoAnns fabric store on the 15th so I may have one half made to see what size of styrofoam I would need if Vicki’s don’t work.  I am working on another one now.  Will share that one when its done.

As I am writing this, the wonderful smell of lemongrass has come up the stairs.  Its bubbling away on the wood stove in the kitchen.  Living in an old house is always interesting.  Sometimes in good ways and other times in bad.

Many thanks for reading my blog on this cold day.  I hope your day is spectacular.  Carole
